About Us The Dragon Scale Consort is a medieval music group, founded in the Middle Kingdom of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. (SCA), with members from the Barony of Sternfeld (Indianapolis, IN) and the Shire of Dragonsmark (Lexington, KY). We are an amateur group of musicians, brought together by a love of European medieval and Renaissance music. The Consort was the longtime dream of Gwyn Singer. She had for several years been trying to assemble a group to get together and play period music. She had played on and off for a number of years with several different people under the Consort name. Eric Browning, an old friend now living in Indianapolis, came to her with the idea of getting a group together to perform for the Cloved Orange Ball, an annual dance event in Indianapolis. In less than six months the group was formed with the current complement of members and managed to pull it off. Since that time the Consort has stuck together and performed for numerous SCA events, balls, and weddings. Our repertoire is not limited to dance music, but to all genres of instrumental music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. About our Symbol In heraldic terms, the description of our badge is "Quarterly vert scaly Or and azure, two signa congruentiae in bend sinister Or". You may recognize one of the components of our badge as the musical symbol now known as the segno. In modern terms it marks the point in the music that the players return to once they reach the end of the printed music. However, during the period of our music it had a different meaning. Aside from looking slightly different, it served as a marking point for all parts to hold their note until all the other parts caught up, similar to the modern fermata. "Signum congruentiae" literally means "sign of coming together". The Consort has come together despite the obstacles of distance, and the annoying fact that real life likes to get in the way of our fun. |
